It’s a logistical nightmare this online shopping. You have to search for a slot some time ahead and take whatever you can. Then try to decide what you’ll have run out of by then. We are hot bedding Waitrose and Sainsbury in an attempt to get our favourites from each. Only Sainsbury sells decent tea (imho)! Kenya Fairtrade teabags in the orange box. Visitors to either of our establishments will always be smiled upon if they arrive bearing this. Emergency beacons have been sent up from Sablet in the past.
So it’s Sainsbury for own brand sundried tomato paste, jars of sundried roasted red peppers in olive oil, tiny jars of fragrant Thai basil paste, boxes of French red and bottles of cooking Soave. Waitrose provide (if you are lucky) bucattini, seeded bread flour, Argan face cream, own brand Rose Harissa jars - my current must have - cheaper than the branded one from Sainsbury. Sainsbury will supply sourdough from the instore bakery, Waitrose Okehampton do not. Apart from that we take what we can from either. But it results in unexpected gluts of coconut milk, sundried tomato paste, jars of olives stuffed with almonds, bottles of Herefordshire cider, and a careless lack of any fresh veg because that’s on the other order...
And neither will supply more than three blocks of butter per order. Why not? They are chucking milk away...just as well we had a small reserve because it’s touch and go whether we can manage on this paltry allowance.
Today it was the orange Sainsbury van that drew up alongside. Inexplicably I had failed to order aubergines or celery! First world problem...let them eat frozen peas! One of the boxes of Shiraz was horribly chewed but Adrian thinks he can tape it up - we can’t afford to send it back! Wine in the hand is worth two on the next order.
Waitrose are due next Friday so I hastily upped the veg count.
By the way, you’ll notice it’s raining today. Yesterday’s blue sky has vanished.
